Austria // What I Learned Traveling Solo

Austria Posts

"Sometimes we have to leave home in order to find out what we left there, and why it matters so much.
-Shauna Niequist, Cold Tangerines

As I referenced last post, I knew traveling solo without my husband would be a growing experience. Here are a few things I learned on this trip:

When Matt is not with me, I'm a little off all-around. As in, I left my panda phone on the plane in Switzerland and spent a large part of my time on both layovers wandering around the Zurich airport, in and out through security, and talking with and submitting a report to lost and found. That is just one example, but many times throughout the trip, I was like a lost little dog.

So husband, thank you. For everything you do. I am very grateful, and traveling without you was a reminder that life together is so much sweeter and less stressful when you are at my side.

And Adam. Thank you for keeping an eye out for me, always asking if I had my passport, and never letting me wander off too far, even when pandas were involved.

Affirmation that I LOVE the whole traveling process. The airports. The airplanes. The lounges. The passport stamps. Flying new airlines. It is a thrill. I watched Frozen for the first time on our way back and cannot get the songs out of my head! Window seats are a must for crossing the pond. Oh and the free food too. Especially the chocolate muffins served on the Air Berlin-Niki flight. Thumbs up. I'm a sucker for free things all-around.

Hot Chocolate. For real, I'm like Buddy the Elf when it comes to this stuff. It's ridiculous. Let's just say enormous amounts of hot chocolate were consumed on this trip. Like every day, multiple times a day.

Matt is a true aviation geek and loves following our travel online. When we would land, his text messages would be waiting to let us know which gate we landed at, along with specific instructions on how to get to our next gate or the nearest lounge. Literally, it was a go right, go left, up the escalator type of directions, almost like we had a secret spy planning out our every move. And when I sent him this picture, he spotted an ANA plane in the back. How in the world he does it, I have no idea. But I love him and his enthusiasm for travel and plane spotting.

Signs. I have a new appreciation for them. Seriously. They are the best in other countries. Perhaps it was because Matt wasn't with (and usually documents them), but we sent him a lot of sign pictures and other random snapshots while we were away.

Milk. I crave it when I travel. Proof that my roots are 100% Wisconsin. It only took a few hours for me to polish off this liter.

Paprika chips are always a good choice.

Nick can get tired. For those of you who know him. You guys, almost every night he was the first in bed. No joke. Adam took this to prove it.

Sometimes I do not make the best decisions. Let's just say Nick practically sprinted to the Golden Arches, and the free bathroom was calling my name. And then I caved for that cheeseburger. Cannot believe that happened, but it did and there is proof. Matt could not believe it when he received the photo.

Croissants. I am addicted to them. Special thanks to the Swiss lounge in Zurich for helping me discover a love for these tasty treats. And don't judge. I had three of them in one day. Forget calories. More croissants please!

I loved Austria and have a new favorite non-beach place, this lakeside town nestled into the mountains.

More to come soon...
